Viridor achieves ISO 55001 certification across its EfW fleet

First in Class: Viridor Becomes First UK Energy from Waste company to Achieve ISO 55001
Viridor has secured ISO 55001 certification for its asset management system, becoming the first Energy from Waste (EfW) company in the UK to achieve this internationally recognised standard.
ISO 55001 is a global standard that defines requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an asset management system. It requires organisations to take a systematic, lifecycle approach to managing physical assets.
For Viridor's EfW facilities, this means managing complex, high-value plant assets proactively to ensure consistent performance against operational, environmental and compliance requirements.
Having embedded the frameworks, Viridor is already seeing operational benefits – better visibility of maintenance spend, reinvigorated cross-functional working, and a strengthened approach to supply chain and contractor performance. These improvements all contribute to a reliable, transparent, and continuously improving service for our customers.
Chris Lockhart, Asset and Engineering Support Manager at Viridor, said: "This certification is a major milestone for Viridor and would not have been possible without the expertise and dedication of a huge number of colleagues across the business. Operational excellence and environmental responsibility go hand in hand, and this certificate further demonstrates this."
Operating in a highly regulated environment, there is an obvious requirement for a robust framework to embed continual improvement and proactive risk management across operations. ISO 55001 provides this by ensuring asset management activities are aligned with business objectives through data-driven decision making – to support smarter investments and improved planning, structured risk management and optimised asset performance throughout the entire lifecycle.
In order to secure the certification, Viridor first undertook third-party gap analysis to understand where improvements were required, after which, the business created a five-year asset management improvement roadmap. This roadmap is now being delivered through a Strategic Asset Management Plan (SAMP), and alongside, an Asset Management Policy is in place to ensure colleagues understand why asset management discipline is important.
At Viridor, we’re building a future where operational excellence and environmental responsibility go hand in hand. We are building a world where nothing goes to waste.
